Family Formation

Family Formation is a calculator that uses information provided by Population as well as family formation rate and age distribution to produce information about families for use in other calculators in the model (this information can also be useful for calibration). It consists of three procedures: Total Families, Families Total, and Number of Persons per Family.

(1) Total Families

Total Families takes the Canada region population (person) from the Population calculator, family formation rate (family / person), and mapping of age to family age to calculate the families (family) array. Families is passed on to Families Total, and also to the calculators Households, Passenger Kilometres by Mode, and Personal Use Vehicle Stocks.

(2) Families Total

Families Total simply takes the families array and collapses some of its dimensions so that the array indices are only time and region. This new array is given the name families total (family) (families has four indices, as opposed to the two of families total). This is passed on to Number of Persons per Family.

Number of Persons per Family has two inputs: families total (family) and Canada total population (person), the latter of which is passed on to it by the Population calculator. Using these it calculates the persons per family array (person / family), organized by time and region. This is not passed to any other calculator, but may be of interest in analysis or calibration.
